Pinging

Pinging is the act of sending a signal to a service (i.e. Technorati, Pingoat) to alert search engines to a blogger has posted new content. The search engine will then 'crawl' or read through your site to see what updates have been made and post these publicly for anyone searching for similar content.

Technorati

On the home page of Technorati.com, on the left hand side is a button "Claim my blog". After you click through and set up your blog info you get to set various tags for your blog. These tags will help readers find blogs with relevant information they may be searching for.

You can ping Technorati after you post by going to http://technorati.com/ping and entering your blog URL.

Most major blog publishing tools also allow you to configure them for automated pinging;

Pingoat

"Pingoat is a service that pings or notifies a number of services that keep track of weblogs and publish them. By pinging, you let the services know that your blog has been updated and hence, they crawl and index your site, publishing your blog contents, thus increasing your blog's popularity. " Pingoat automatically will ping up to 50 sites for you, including technorati, feedburner, newsgator, the list goes on. You can select which of the sites you want to set it to automatically ping. After registering your url you are provided with a link you can bookmark, that will automatically trigger a ping when you visit the site, with no additional work on your part needed.
